4 Major Signs It’s Time to Leave Your Job
Are you thinking about what life would be like if you quit your current job? Maybe you’re having thoughts about whether or not your employers have the best interests for you and your family. Whatever the reasons, keeping a hold of a toxic job can do more damage than just your daily life in the job, it can affect your mental health long term, change your personality, and hurt your physical health as well.
If you are feeling like you need a sign, and are having one (or all) of the following happening to you at your job, then it’s time to dust off your resume and start hitting the job boards.
When You are Not Getting Acknowledged for Your Hard Work
You dedicated years of your life, you work really hard to make progress on your projects to further the company’s future. But you see a pattern that everyone else in different departments are treated a little differently than you.
Maybe you have clearly proven with key metrics that you and your efforts actually perform, while Sharon on the other team clearly failed, but still somehow seems to get accolades for her and her teams’ efforts.
When you start to notice favorites from your boss, CEO, or managers, and see a clear pattern that no matter how hard you try, and you don’t even get a pat on the back, it’s time to leave.
Every Morning You Dread Going to Work
If you are opening your eyes, and the first thought that comes to your mind is work accompanied with an overwhelming feeling of dread, and a verbal release of, “ughhhhhh”, it might be time to start your escape route. This is usually the biggest sign of a toxic workplace and possibly burnout, or narcissistic boss. Having this emotion first thing in the day can really set the tone for the rest of it, and can lead to more emotional problems in the long term like depression, and anxiety.
Your Job is Holding You Back
This is an interesting one because a lot of people do not know about this tactic that some toxic employers will do. This is when an employer won’t give you a title that you clearly have earned the right to, like a Manager role, but they give you the title of Lead. This is a tactic to a.) not have to pay you more, and b.) you won’t be able to pursue other jobs for that title, and have an opportunity to leave for better pay and benefits. If this is happening to you, leave as soon as you possibly can. Start applying to those jobs with your rightful title, and be honest with the hiring managers that you are leaving because your current employer will not give you the title even though you are performing all of the tasks.
Your Responsibilities Have Grown But Your Paycheck Hasn’t
This is a no-brainer, right? Yes, it’s good to have more responsibilities and learn new skill for our work to keep sharp. But if your responsibilities -keep- growing, and your finding yourself working more than 40 hours just to keep up, yet your paycheck is the same, it’s time to find yourself another job. This is a clear boundaries that business and company owners love to push and see how much free work they can squeeze out of you. While it’s not fair to other coworkers to slack off all the time with work, you realistically should not be killing yourself all day everyday to fill every second of your work day with tasks to get done. Until it’s reflected in your paychecks, take a deep breath, take a step back, and work on your resume with all of the tasks you do in your work day/week and find someone who would love to pay you more for that work ethic.
